Vicki Hendricks is a tart, and she'd like as many people as possible to know it. She's one of those smart, female writers who have collectively staked out their own sub-genre, christened it Tart Noir and started up a web-site to spread the word (http://www.tartcity.com/). Other members like Sparkle Hayter may be quicker with a quip and a murder, but Vicki knows how to slow down for some good, hard sex. savouring the journey as much as the destination.

Iguana Love is the story of a good girl gone bad. Ramona Romano has a husband and a job and an apartment in Miami. What she'd like are the tanned, muscled bodies worn by the diving instructors at the school where she's been taking classes, and a life on land as richly sensual as the one she's finding under water. Dumping hubby Gary is just a matter of enduring a few, small guilt pangs. Chasing the hunks in scuba gear, however, means maxing-out three credit cards.

But it's worth it if Ramona can achieve the freedom that she thinks may be part of being male. It's certainly a freedom enjoyed by the dangerous teasers she finds so titillating. On the other hand Ramona may merely be trading the marriage trap for the prison of obsession. As she improves her diving skills and buffs up at the gym, Ramona is unable to resist being drawn into crime and murder. What kind of crime? Think Miami. Think diving. Think weight lifting. Yep, those crimes.

Iguana Love is an exploration of one female's dark sexual fantasies. Crime and violence come at the end of Ramona's downhill ride, but Hendricks certainly knows how to grease the slide. The book should come with the caution: "Readers may be tempted to stroke some lengths, and dust the cobwebs off their dumbells."

Reviewer Kerry J. Schooley is a poet, a mystery writer, a cynic, a nag and a pedant in Hamilton, Ontario.
